Painting Description
''The Lady with an Ermine'' is a portrait painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. Created around 1489–1490, this work is one of only four female portraits Leonardo painted, alongside his iconic ''Mona Lisa''. The subject of the painting is identified as Cecilia Gallerani, a young woman from Milan who was the mistress of Leonardo's patron, Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. The painting is renowned for its exquisite detail, the innovative representation of the sitter, and its psychological depth.
The artwork showcases Leonardo's mastery of sfumato, a painting technique that creates a soft transition between colors and tones, akin to smoke or beyond the focus plane. This technique contributes to the lifelike quality of the portrait. The lady's attire and hairstyle reflect the fashion of the Milanese court at the time. The ermine she holds, a symbol of purity and a pun on Gallerani's name (the Greek word for ermine is ''galeē''), also serves as an emblem of the Sforza family, adding layers of meaning to the portrait.
Measuring 54 cm × 39 cm (21 in × 15 in), the painting is executed in oil on a walnut wood panel. It is currently housed in the Czartoryski Museum, Kraków, Poland, though it has a storied provenance, having been owned by various private collectors and subjected to multiple restorations over the centuries.
''The Lady with an Ermine'' is celebrated for its demonstration of Leonardo's skills as a painter and his deep understanding of anatomy, as evidenced by the precise depiction of the ermine and the delicate rendering of the human hand. The portrait's composition, with its turn of the head and the direct yet enigmatic gaze of the subject, exemplifies the innovative approach to portraiture that Leonardo developed, influencing generations of artists to come. The work is considered a seminal piece in the canon of Western art and a prime example of Leonardo's contribution to the portrait genre.
