Painting Description
''St. Jerome in the Wilderness'' is a painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, dated to around 1480. The unfinished work depicts Saint Jerome during his retreat to the Syrian desert, where he lived the life of a hermit. The painting is an exemplary showcase of Leonardo's keen interest in the human anatomy and the emotional expression of religious fervor. It is executed in oil on a walnut wood panel, measuring 103 cm × 75 cm (41 in × 30 in).
The composition presents a gaunt St. Jerome kneeling in a rocky landscape, with a crucifix in the upper left corner to which he gazes devoutly. The saint is accompanied by a lion, referencing the legend of Jerome removing a thorn from the lion's paw, after which the creature became his devoted companion. The painting is notable for its dramatic chiaroscuro and the detailed depiction of the saint's muscular yet emaciated body, reflecting Leonardo's anatomical studies.
Although the painting is unfinished, it offers insight into Leonardo's artistic process, as it reveals the artist's underdrawing and the layering technique. The work is also significant for its emotional intensity and the psychological depth it conveys through St. Jerome's penitent expression and the stark, desolate landscape.
After Leonardo's death, the painting had a tumultuous history, passing through various owners and at one point being cut into pieces. It was later restored and reassembled. Today, ''St. Jerome in the Wilderness'' is held in the Vatican Museums' collection, where it remains an important piece for the study of Leonardo's oeuvre and the development of Renaissance art.
