Painting Description
The ''Mona Lisa'' is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. Considered an archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, it has been described as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world." The painting's novel qualities include the subject's enigmatic expression, the monumentality of the composition, the subtle modeling of forms, and the atmospheric illusionism.
Leonardo began painting the ''Mona Lisa'' in 1503 or 1504 in Florence, Italy. Although the Louvre states that it was "doubtless painted between 1503 and 1506", the art historian Martin Kemp says there are some difficulties in confirming the actual dates with certainty. In fact, it is believed that Leonardo may have continued working on it as late as 1517. It was acquired by King Francis I of France and is now the property of the French Republic, on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1797.
The subject of the portrait is generally believed to be Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Florence merchant Francesco del Giocondo, but there has been much speculation and debate regarding the true identity of the sitter. Leonardo's use of sfumato—a technique of allowing tones and colors to shade gradually into one another, producing softened outlines or hazy forms—was innovative and contributes to the painting's dreamlike quality. The ''Mona Lisa'''s enigmatic expression, which seems both alluring and aloof, has given the portrait universal fame.
The painting's size is modest, measuring 77 cm × 53 cm (30 in × 21 in). Its fame is reinforced by numerous reproductions and references in thousands of works across various media. The ''Mona Lisa'' has survived for more than 500 years, and an international commission convened in 1952 noted that "the picture is in a remarkable state of preservation." It is arguably the most famous painting in the world and is seen by millions of visitors every year.
The ''Mona Lisa'' has been the subject of a wide range of scholarly theories and has been the focus of poetry, literature, and scientific examinations. Notable aspects of the painting include the unproven identity of the sitter, the myth of the artwork's theft and return, and questions about the original size of the painting. Its legacy is reinforced by its status in popular culture, and it continues to intrigue and inspire art lovers and historians alike.
