Painting Description
The ''Mona Lisa'' is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. Considered an archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, it has been described as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world." The painting's novel qualities include the subject's enigmatic expression, the monumentality of the composition, the subtle modeling of forms, and the atmospheric illusionism.
Painted in oil on a white Lombardy poplar panel, the work is believed to have been commissioned by the wealthy Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo for his wife Lisa Gherardini, and is sometimes known as ''La Gioconda''. The painting's title ''Mona Lisa'' stems from a description by Renaissance art historian Giorgio Vasari, who wrote "Leonardo undertook to paint, for Francesco del Giocondo, the portrait of Mona Lisa, his wife." "Mona" in Italian is a polite form of address originating as "ma donna" – similar to "Ma’am", "Madam", or "my lady" in English.
Leonardo began the project in 1503 and continued working on it for several years, bringing it to completion in 1517. It is believed that he continued refining the work until his death in 1519. The ''Mona Lisa'' was acquired by King Francis I of France and is now the property of the French Republic, on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1797.
The painting's fame escalated in the 19th and 20th centuries due to the attention of the Symbolist movement, the establishment of art history as a discipline, as well as a theft in 1911 that kept it out of the public eye for two years. It has also been a subject of a wide range of scholarly and popular interpretations over the centuries, from theories about the sitter's identity and emotions to analyses of its unique qualities of composition and form.
The ''Mona Lisa'' has had a profound influence on the art world, inspiring not only painters but also writers, singers, and filmmakers. Its iconic status has been reinforced by its reproduction on all manner of merchandise and its cameo appearances in various forms of media. The painting is encased in bulletproof glass and is considered an invaluable treasure of the art world, attracting millions of visitors each year.
