Painting Description
"Group of Riders in the Battle of Anghiari" (1503-04) is a lost artwork by the renowned Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci. It was intended to be a fresco depicting a scene from the Battle of Anghiari, a 1440 conflict between the Republic of Florence and the Republic of Milan. Leonardo was commissioned to create this work for the Sala del Gran Consiglio (Hall of the Grand Council) in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence. The fresco was to be a companion piece to another mural by Michelangelo Buonarroti, who was to depict the Battle of Cascina on the opposite wall. Both works were to celebrate Florentine military prowess.
Leonardo's innovative technique for the mural, involving a wax-based tempera applied to a wall prepared with an undercoat of gesso, proved unsuccessful. The paint did not adhere properly and began to flake away almost immediately, leaving the work unfinished and subject to deterioration. Despite its incomplete state, contemporaries praised the dynamism and power of the figures Leonardo sketched, particularly the central group of riders engaged in fierce combat. This group was said to exemplify Leonardo's mastery of depicting the human form in motion, as well as his understanding of the anatomy of both men and horses.
Although the original fresco has been lost, its memory survives through copies and sketches made by other artists, such as Peter Paul Rubens, who encountered the work before its eventual disappearance. These copies provide valuable insights into Leonardo's composition and artistic intentions. The "Group of Riders in the Battle of Anghiari" remains a significant subject of study for art historians and Leonardo scholars, as it exemplifies the artist's innovative approach to painting and his ability to capture the intensity of historical events.
