Lambert Doomer Paintings

Lambert Doomer was a Dutch Golden Age landscape painter and draftsman, born in Amsterdam on February 29, 1624, to a family of artists. His father, Herman Doomer, was a well-known furniture maker and woodworker who also had connections with the art community, which likely influenced Lambert's early exposure to art. Lambert initially trained under his father but soon developed a passion for painting and drawing, which led him to become an apprentice to Rembrandt van Rijn around 1640.

During his time with Rembrandt, Doomer honed his skills in drawing and painting, absorbing the master's techniques and the Baroque style that would come to define his work. After completing his apprenticeship, Doomer embarked on a journey through France and Germany, which greatly impacted his artistic style. He documented his travels in numerous sketches and drawings that captured the landscapes and cityscapes he encountered, providing valuable visual records of the 17th-century Europe.

Doomer returned to Amsterdam in the mid-1650s and established himself as an independent master. He quickly gained recognition for his landscapes, which often featured rivers, ruins, and rural scenes. His works were characterized by their attention to detail, use of light and shadow, and the incorporation of everyday life into his compositions. Doomer was also known for his meticulous pen and wash drawings, which were highly regarded by collectors.

Despite his success, Lambert Doomer was not prolific in terms of large-scale paintings, and his drawings remain the most significant part of his oeuvre.
