Painting Description
Kunisada, Utagawa, also known as Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865), was one of the most prolific and successful ukiyo-e woodblock print artists of the Edo period in Japan. Born in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Kunisada was initially named Tsunoda Shozo. He later took on the name Kunisada when he became a student of the prominent ukiyo-e master Utagawa Toyokuni. Kunisada's career spanned over five decades, during which he produced a vast array of works, including portraits of kabuki actors, beautiful women (bijin-ga), and scenes from Japanese literature and folklore.
Kunisada's style is characterized by its vibrant colors, dynamic compositions, and meticulous attention to detail. His prints often depicted the popular culture of the time, capturing the elegance and drama of Edo-period life. Kunisada was particularly renowned for his actor prints (yakusha-e), which vividly portrayed the personalities and costumes of kabuki performers. These works were highly sought after by theatergoers and contributed significantly to his fame and commercial success.
One of Kunisada's notable works is "Der Kaiserliche Ratgeber Kanshojo, Japan, Um 1825." This piece exemplifies his mastery in portraying historical and legendary figures with a sense of grandeur and refinement. The print likely depicts Sugawara no Michizane, a revered scholar, poet, and politician from the Heian period, who was later deified as Tenjin, the god of scholarship and learning. The title "Der Kaiserliche Ratgeber Kanshojo" translates to "The Imperial Advisor Kanshojo," reflecting Michizane's esteemed position in the imperial court.
Kunisada's contributions to the ukiyo-e genre were immense, and his works remain highly regarded in both Japanese and international art circles. His ability to capture the essence of his subjects and the spirit of his time has ensured his lasting legacy as one of the great masters of ukiyo-e.
