Konstantin Iakovlevich Kryzhitskii was a distinguished Russian landscape painter, born on September 23, 1858, in the city of Yelizavetgrad (now Kropyvnytskyi, Ukraine). His early life was marked by the tragic loss of his parents, which left him orphaned at the age of fourteen. Despite these early hardships, Kryzhitskii showed a strong inclination towards art, prompting him to pursue his passion with great determination.

Kryzhitskii's formal art education began at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, where he studied from 1877 to 1884. Under the mentorship of prominent artists such as Mikhail Konstantinovich Clodt and Maxim Vorobiev, he honed his skills and developed a profound understanding of landscape painting. Kryzhitskii's academic achievements were recognized with several awards, including a gold medal upon his graduation, which afforded him the opportunity to travel abroad. His journeys through Europe, particularly his time in Italy and France, had a significant influence on his artistic development, enriching his palette and broadening his stylistic range.

Upon returning to Russia, Kryzhitskii immersed himself in the vibrant cultural life of Saint Petersburg, becoming an active member of the Society of Russian Watercolorists and later, the Peredvizhniki (The Wanderers), a cooperative of realist artists who sought to engage with the public through traveling exhibitions. His work during this period was characterized by meticulous attention to natural detail, atmospheric perspective, and a harmonious, often poetic, depiction of the Russian countryside. Kryzhitskii excelled in capturing the transient moods of nature, from the serene glow of dawn to the melancholic tones of dusk, earning him widespread acclaim.

He struggled with health issues and faced financial difficulties, yet he continued to produce a prolific body of work until his untimely death on December 11, 1911, in Saint Petersburg.
