Painting Description
Franz Xaver Mozart (26 July 1791 – 29 July 1844), also known as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Jr., was the youngest son of renowned composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) and his wife Constanze. Named after his father’s friend Franzaver Süssmayr, he was trained in music under the tutelage of his father and later completed his education under the mentorship of Antonio Salieri and Johann Georg Albrechsberger.
Despite living in the shadow of his father's substantial legacy as one of the most celebrated composers of the Classical era, Franz Xaver Mozart himself made contributions to the musical world. Primarily working as a pianist, conductor, and composer, his major works includes a number of piano concertos, chamber music, and lieder.
Residing in Lemberg, Galicia (modern day Lviv, Ukraine) for most of his adult life, Franz Xavier Mozart became a pivotal figure in the development of music in the region, contributing critically to the local music academy, organizing concerts and events, and bringing attention to the musical culture of the area.
Notably, Mozart Jr. is the subject of an 1825 portrait by Karl Gottlieb Schweikert. This artwork, held in significant esteem, captures a vital representation of an influential historical figure who, despite bearing a famous namesake, carved his own distinct path in the realm of music.
His death in 1844 marked the end of direct lineage from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but his own accomplishments, as well as his maintenance of his father's musical legacy, ensures he remains a notable figure in music history.
