José Villegas Cordero was a Spanish painter born on August 26, 1844, in Seville, Spain. He is known for his genre works, historical scenes, and his skilled representation of oriental themes, following the tradition of Orientalism in 19th-century European art. His works often depicted Moorish interiors and figures, reflecting his interest in the exotica of North African culture and the broader Mediterranean basin.

Villegas showed an early talent for art and initially studied painting in Seville under the guidance of local artist Eduardo Cano de la Peña. In pursuit of broader experiences, he moved to Rome in 1867, where he became part of the vibrant international community of artists. Rome offered him the classical education and exposure to Renaissance masterpieces that notably influenced his style and artistic direction.

During his time in Italy, Villegas developed a reputation for his decorative and historical pieces. His painting 'The Recitation of the Rosary' received critical acclaim and was indicative of his ability to blend historical subjects with a contemporary sensibility. As his career progressed, he became increasingly interested in Orientalist subjects, inspired by his travels to North Africa, particularly Morocco and Egypt.

Villegas' work was characterized by meticulous attention to detail, vibrant colors, and a dynamic use of light and shadow, which gave his scenes a sense of immediacy and realism. In 1898, he returned to Spain and became the director of the Museo del Prado in Madrid, one of the most prestigious positions in the Spanish art world. During his tenure, he was instrumental in modernizing the museum and increasing its collection, particularly through the acquisition of works by contemporary artists.

After retiring from the Prado in 1918, Villegas continued to paint until his death in Madrid on November 9, 1921. Throughout his life, he was awarded numerous honors and his works were exhibited widely in Europe and collected by art lovers internationally. Today, José Villegas Cordero's paintings are held in many important collections and continue to be admired for their technical skill and evocative portrayal of historical and Orientalist themes.
