Pedro de Cieza de León, known as Jose de Cieza, was a Spanish conquistador and chronicler of Peru. He is recognized primarily for his detailed historical account of the Incas and the early Spanish conquest of Peru. Born in Llerena, Spain in 1518, Cieza de León traveled to the New World at a young age and participated in various military expeditions during the Spanish conquest.

Cieza de León arrived in the Americas around the age of thirteen and initially served in the campaigns in Nicaragua and Guatemala before moving to Peru in 1536. He took part in the civil wars among the Spanish conquistadors and was a soldier under the command of Sebastián de Belalcázar, one of the leading figures in the conquest of Peru and Ecuador.

Despite his role as a soldier, Cieza de León is best remembered for his literary work, 'Crónica del Perú', which is divided into four parts. The first part, 'El Señorío de los Incas', is the only one that was completely finished and published during his lifetime. This work is a valuable historical source on Inca history, culture, and society, as well as the early years of the Spanish conquest. Cieza de León's extensive travels throughout the Andean region, his keen observations, and his interviews with indigenous peoples and fellow conquistadors provided the basis for his chronicles.

In his writings, Cieza de León not only documented military campaigns and the conflicts of the conquest but also took a great interest in the geography, flora, and fauna of the regions he visited. His descriptions of the landscapes and settlements give important insights into the environmental and cultural context of 16th-century Peru.

Pedro de Cieza de León died in Seville, Spain, in 1554, at the age of 36. Although his life was short, his work has left an enduring mark on the historiography of the Andean region. Today, he is considered one of the most important chroniclers of the Spanish conquest, and his Crónica del Perú is a seminal work in the history of Peru and a valuable resource for understanding the Inca civilization and the impact of the Spanish conquest.
