Painting Description
"The Lady of Shalott" is a painting by the British Pre-Raphaelite artist John William Waterhouse, completed in 1888. It is the third and most famous of Waterhouse's paintings to depict a scene from Alfred, Lord Tennyson's 1832 poem of the same name, which tells the tragic story of Elaine of Astolat, a young noblewoman confined under a mysterious curse to weave a continuous web without ever looking directly out at the world. She is doomed to die if she stops weaving or looks out of her window, which eventually happens when she sees the reflection of the knight Sir Lancelot and falls in love with him.
Waterhouse's depiction is a masterful representation of the moment when the Lady of Shalott, having seen Sir Lancelot in her mirror, decides to look directly upon him, thereby bringing the curse upon herself. The painting shows her leaving her loom and grasping the chain of the boat that will carry her to Camelot and to her death. The rich, vibrant colors and meticulous attention to detail reflect the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, of which Waterhouse was a later adherent, though not a founding member.
The artwork is renowned for its embodiment of the Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic, with its emphasis on sensuality, medievalism, and a keen eye for naturalistic detail. Waterhouse's "The Lady of Shalott" is often celebrated for its emotional depth and its haunting portrayal of the tension between the artist's world of imagination and the outer world of reality. The painting is held in the Tate Britain in London and remains one of Waterhouse's most admired works, frequently studied and referenced in discussions of both Pre-Raphaelite art and Victorian culture.
