He was a pivotal figure in the British rural naturalist art movement, known for his meticulous and serene depictions of the English countryside. North was largely self-taught and began his career as an illustrator for books and magazines, where he showcased his keen observation of nature and rural life.

North's artistic style was heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of English painters, poets, and critics, founded in 1848. Although he was not an official member, his work shared the Pre-Raphaelites' detailed observation of nature and their use of bright, clear colors. His landscapes often featured scenes from the West Country and the area around the River Avon, where he spent much of his life.
