John Hazlehurst Boneval Latrobe was an American lawyer, author, and inventor born on May 4, 1803, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was also a significant figure in the arts and architecture, though he is not primarily known for his artistic endeavors in the same way as his father, Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who was a notable architect responsible for designing parts of the United States Capitol and the Baltimore Basilica. John H. B. Latrobe, however, made his mark through his contributions to the legal profession, his involvement in the American Colonization Society, and his support of the arts and education.

Latrobe graduated from the University of Maryland in 1822, and after studying law, he began practicing in Baltimore. His legal career was distinguished and diverse, including serving as a patent lawyer where his interest in technology and innovation was evident. He was involved in the development of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and held the position of its legal counsel for many years.

Aside from his legal work, Latrobe was deeply involved in the American Colonization Society, an organization that promoted the migration of free African Americans to Africa. He served as the Society's president and was a strong advocate for the establishment of Liberia, where he played a role in the drafting of the country's constitution.

Latrobe's contributions to the arts were notable as well. He was a founding member of the Maryland Historical Society and played a significant role in the cultural life of Baltimore through his support of various artistic and cultural institutions. He had a keen interest in literature and wrote several books and articles on various subjects, including history and travel.

John H. B. Latrobe passed away on September 11, 1891, in Baltimore, Maryland. Throughout his life, he was recognized for his intellect, his philanthropic efforts, and his contributions to the legal profession, as well as his support for the arts and education. His legacy is that of a Renaissance man who used his diverse talents and interests to make a lasting impact on his community and country.
