John Fery Paintings

John Fery was an Austro-Hungarian-born American artist known for his large-scale paintings of the American West. Born as Johann Levy in Strasswalchen, Austria in 1859, Fery was trained in European art schools, including the prestigious Royal Academy in Munich, Germany, where he fostered his skills in landscape painting.

In the late 19th century, Fery immigrated to the United States, where he began to explore the vast landscapes of the American West. He was particularly enamored with the Rocky Mountains and spent considerable time in that region. Fery’s work was characterized by his grandiose portrayals of the American wilderness, often emphasizing the dramatic scale and beauty of the mountains, forests, and waterways.

Fery quickly became associated with the promotion of the American West through his art. He was commissioned by the Great Northern Railway to create paintings that would attract tourists to areas like Glacier National Park. These works served not only as art but also as early advertisements for the natural wonders of the United States.

Despite the commercial nature of some of his work, Fery was deeply passionate about the landscape he painted. His paintings often convey a sense of awe and are imbued with the vivid colors and dynamic light of the regions that inspired him.
