Painting Description
"Jupiter et Semele" is a significant oil on canvas painting by the French artist Jean Raoux (1677–1734), dating from the early 18th century. The artwork depicts the mythological tale of Jupiter, the king of the gods in Roman mythology, and Semele, a mortal woman and priestess of Juno. According to the myth, Semele becomes one of Jupiter's lovers and is subsequently tricked by Juno, Jupiter's wife, into asking to see Jupiter in his divine form. Unable to withstand the sight of his thunder and lightning, Semele perishes, but Jupiter saves their unborn child, Bacchus (Dionysus), who is later born from his thigh.
Raoux's interpretation of this dramatic scene is noted for its sensual and emotional intensity, capturing the moment of Semele's realization of her fate. The painting is a masterful example of the Baroque style, characterized by its dynamic composition, dramatic use of light and shadow, and the vivid portrayal of the human form. The work showcases Raoux's skill in rendering textures and his ability to convey the narrative through expressive figures and a rich color palette.
Jean Raoux, a native of Montpellier, was a prominent painter of historical and mythological subjects, as well as genre scenes. He was trained in Paris and Rome, where he was influenced by the works of the Italian masters. Raoux's paintings were well-received in his time, and he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris in 1709. "Jupiter et Semele" remains one of his most acclaimed works and is considered an important contribution to French Baroque painting.
The painting is held in various collections and has been exhibited in several prestigious museums, reflecting its enduring appeal and significance in the history of European art. Through "Jupiter et Semele," Raoux continues to be recognized for his artistic talent and his ability to bring classical mythology to life on canvas.
