Painting Description
Étienne Chevalier (1410–1474) was a notable French finance minister and patron of the arts during the 15th century. Serving under King Charles VII and his successor Louis XI, Chevalier was instrumental in the administration of the royal treasury and played a key role in the economic recovery of France following the Hundred Years' War. Beyond his political and financial acumen, Chevalier is perhaps best remembered for his patronage of the arts, particularly his commissioning of works from the celebrated French painter Jean Fouquet.
One of the most significant works associated with Étienne Chevalier is the diptych "The Virgin and Child with Saint Stephen," also known as "The Melun Diptych," painted by Jean Fouquet around 1452. This diptych is renowned for its left panel, titled "Patron Paying Homage to the Virgin and Child," which depicts Chevalier himself in a devotional pose, kneeling before the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. The Virgin is portrayed in a heavenly realm, seated on a throne, with Chevalier presented by his patron saint, Stephen, to whom the diptych is dedicated.
Jean Fouquet, one of the foremost French artists of the 15th century, is known for his innovative approach to painting and his fusion of French Gothic and Italian Renaissance styles. His work for Étienne Chevalier is considered a masterpiece of European art, showcasing Fouquet's skill in portraiture and his use of vivid colors and detailed imagery. The "Patron Paying Homage to the Virgin and Child" is particularly noted for its realistic representation of Chevalier and the striking contrast between the earthly figure of the patron and the ethereal depiction of the divine figures.
The diptych originally adorned the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame in Melun, where Chevalier had intended it to serve as a memorial for himself and his wife. Today, the panels of the diptych are separated, with the "Patron Paying Homage to the Virgin and Child" residing in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, and the right panel, featuring the Madonna and Child, held at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. The work remains an important example of the intimate relationship between art and patronage in the Renaissance period and a testament to the religious and cultural milieu of 15th-century France.
