Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It is widely considered one of the most significant works of the early Northern Renaissance, as well as one of the greatest artistic masterpieces of Belgium. Attributed to the Early Netherlandish painters Jan van Eyck and his brother Hubert van Eyck, the altarpiece is renowned for its intricate detail, use of color, and pioneering use of oil paint.
The altarpiece was commissioned by the merchant Jodocus Vijd and his wife Elisabeth Borluut for their chapel in St. John's Church, which was later renamed St. Bavo's Cathedral. Although the exact date of the commission is unknown, a document from 1434 records the altarpiece as being mostly completed by Jan van Eyck, following the death of his brother Hubert, who is believed to have started the work.
The Ghent Altarpiece consists of twelve panels, eight of which are hinged shutters that can be opened or closed to reveal different scenes. When closed, the exterior panels show the Annunciation along with portraits of the donors and representations of the prophets and sibyls. Upon opening, the interior panels reveal a complex, symbolic representation of the Christian faith, with the central panel depicting the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, a representation of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, surrounded by various groups of worshippers.
The altarpiece has been the subject of numerous thefts and was nearly destroyed during several conflicts, including the French Revolutionary Wars and World War II. Its survival is considered something of a miracle, and it has undergone extensive conservation efforts to preserve it for future generations.
Jan van Eyck's contribution to the Ghent Altarpiece is particularly noted for his mastery of oil painting, which allowed for unprecedented clarity and attention to detail. His technique has been studied extensively and has influenced countless artists over the centuries. The altarpiece remains a touchstone for the study of the Northern Renaissance and continues to attract scholars and art lovers from around the world.
