Tufts founded the Arctic Soda Fountain Company in Boston, which became one of the leading manufacturers of soda fountains. Beyond his business endeavors, James W. Tufts is perhaps best known for his visionary development of Pinehurst, North Carolina. Opening in 1895, Pinehurst evolved into a premier destination for golf in the United States, largely due to Tufts' efforts to create a high-quality resort experience. He hired Frederick Law Olmsted, the famous landscape architect responsible for New York City's Central Park, to design the village, emphasizing health, recreation, and the beauty of the natural landscape.
