Painting Description
"Justice between the Archangels Michael and Gabriel" is a notable work of art by the Italian painter Jacobello Del Fiore, created in the early 15th century. This tempera and gold on panel painting is a prime example of the International Gothic style, which was prevalent in Europe at the end of the Middle Ages. The artwork is particularly significant for its representation of the allegorical figure of Justice, flanked by the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, each embodying the virtues of strength and message, respectively.
The painting measures 140 cm in height and 65 cm in width and is currently housed in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, Italy. It was originally part of a larger altarpiece, which has since been disassembled. The central figure of Justice is depicted seated on a throne, holding a sword and scales, traditional symbols of judgment and fairness. The archangels stand on either side, with Michael holding a spear as he tramples a demon, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, and Gabriel, who is often associated with the Annunciation, holding a lily, a symbol of purity.
Jacobello Del Fiore's work is characterized by its vivid color palette, intricate detail, and the use of gold leaf, which adds a divine luminosity to the composition. The painting is an important example of the Venetian school's contribution to the Gothic tradition and reflects the city's status as a cultural hub during the period. "Justice between the Archangels Michael and Gabriel" is not only a masterpiece of religious art but also an artifact that offers insight into the societal values and artistic aspirations of early 15th-century Venice.
