Painting Description
"Circa 1778-80" is a notable period in the oeuvre of Isoda Koryusai, a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist known for his woodblock prints and paintings. Koryusai, originally a samurai, became a professional ukiyo-e artist in the late 1760s, and his work from the late 1770s to 1780 is particularly significant for its contributions to the development of the bijinga (pictures of beautiful women) and kachō-e (bird-and-flower) genres.
During this period, Koryusai produced some of his most acclaimed works, which are characterized by their elegant and elongated figures, a departure from the more robust style of his predecessors. His innovative use of hashira-e (pillar prints) and the development of the hashirakakae (pillar picture) format, which were narrow vertical prints designed to be displayed on the pillars of traditional Japanese houses, marked a creative evolution in the ukiyo-e tradition.
Koryusai's work from circa 1778-80 also includes a series of shunga (erotic prints), which are considered among the finest in the genre for their artistic quality and expressive content. His mastery of color and line is evident in these prints, which often feature delicate color gradations and intricate patterns.
The artist's contributions to the field during this time were recognized by his contemporaries, and he was granted the prestigious title of Hokkyo, a rank within the Buddhist hierarchy, which was a rare honor for an ukiyo-e artist. This period of Koryusai's career is well-documented through surviving prints and paintings, which continue to be studied and appreciated for their aesthetic beauty and historical significance in the context of Japanese art.
The works from circa 1778-80 by Isoda Koryusai remain an essential part of the ukiyo-e canon and are held in numerous museum collections worldwide, where they are exhibited as examples of the artist's skill and the rich cultural heritage of the Edo period.
