Painting Description
"The Just Judges" and "The Knights of Christ" are two of the lower panels from the renowned Ghent Altarpiece (also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb), a polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. This masterpiece of Northern Renaissance art was begun by the early Netherlandish painter Hubert van Eyck, who is believed to have laid out its complex and intricate design before his death in 1426, after which his younger brother Jan van Eyck completed the work and delivered it to its commissioners in 1432.
The Ghent Altarpiece consists of a total of 24 panels, with the "The Just Judges" and "The Knights of Christ" forming part of the lower register of the altarpiece's exterior wings. When closed, these panels are visible and depict various figures that are symbolic of Christian virtues and the path to salvation.
"The Just Judges" panel features a group of dignified male figures on horseback, believed to represent the biblical judges or possibly the knights of the Apocalypse, embodying the concept of fair and divine justice. This panel is particularly famous not only for its artistry but also for its history, as it was stolen in 1934 and has been missing ever since, making it one of the most sought-after lost artworks in the world.
"The Knights of Christ" panel, adjacent to "The Just Judges," depicts a group of Christian knights, led by Saint George and including Saint Michael, riding forth as a representation of the militant aspect of Christian faith, defending the Church and the faith against heresy and evil.
Both panels are celebrated for their exquisite detail, use of color, and pioneering use of oil paint, which allowed Jan van Eyck to achieve remarkable effects in luminosity and texture. The altarpiece as a whole is considered a milestone in art history for its complex iconography, technical innovation, and its profound influence on the development of Northern Renaissance art.
The Ghent Altarpiece, with "The Just Judges" and "The Knights of Christ" panels, continues to be an object of extensive art-historical research, religious interpretation, and cultural fascination, representing a pinnacle of 15th-century European painting.
