Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It is considered a masterpiece of European art and one of the world's treasures. The altarpiece was started by Hubert van Eyck, who was commissioned to begin the work, and was completed by his younger brother Jan van Eyck after Hubert's death in 1426. It was completed in 1432. The altarpiece is renowned for its intricate detail, use of color, and for the pioneering techniques of the then-nascent Northern Renaissance art.
One of the most notable panels of the Ghent Altarpiece is The Virgin Mary, which is part of the upper register of the opened altarpiece. This panel depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a throne, embodying the archetype of the Heavenly Queen and Mother of God. She is portrayed in a richly adorned blue robe, symbolizing her purity, and is reading from a book, which is often interpreted as the Bible, symbolizing wisdom and her prophetic role. The panel is remarkable for its attention to detail, including the realistic depiction of the textures and materials, such as the jewels and gold of her crown, and the intricate embroidery of her gown.
The Virgin Mary panel is flanked by other panels showing John the Baptist, God the Father, and the choir of angels, creating a celestial court scene. The entire altarpiece, when opened, reveals a complex theological vision of salvation history, with the lower central panel famously depicting the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb.
The Ghent Altarpiece has been the subject of numerous studies and writings, not only for its artistic qualities but also for its historical context, having survived several thefts and wartime threats. Its conservation and restoration have been ongoing, revealing even more about the techniques and materials used by the van Eyck brothers. The Virgin Mary panel, like the rest of the altarpiece, continues to be a focal point for art historians and enthusiasts, reflecting the pinnacle of early Netherlandish painting.
