Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It is considered a masterpiece of European art and one of the world's treasures. The altarpiece was started by Hubert van Eyck, who painted the framework, but it was completed by his younger brother Jan van Eyck. Both brothers are credited with pioneering new approaches to oil painting and intricate detail in their work.
One of the central panels of the lower register of the opened altarpiece features The Virgin Mary. This panel, often referred to as "The Virgin Mary 2" to distinguish it from other depictions of Mary by the van Eycks, showcases the Virgin in a domestic interior, seated on a throne and reading a book, which is commonly interpreted as the Bible. She is depicted in a richly adorned blue robe, symbolizing her purity, and is crowned by a canopy of intricately detailed architecture. The panel exemplifies the van Eycks' skill in rendering materials and light, as well as their ability to imbue their figures with a sense of grace and serenity.
The Ghent Altarpiece has been the subject of numerous studies and writings, not only for its artistic significance but also for its historical context, having survived nearly six centuries that included theft, vandalism, and multiple restorations. The panel of The Virgin Mary is particularly noted for its fine detail and the use of light, which would go on to influence the development of Northern Renaissance art. The altarpiece as a whole, and The Virgin Mary panel in particular, continue to be a focus of art historical research, conservation efforts, and public fascination.
