Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It is widely considered one of the most significant and influential paintings in Western art history and is attributed to the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck. Completed in 1432, the altarpiece is renowned for its intricate detail, use of oil paint, and pioneering techniques in realism.
The altarpiece consists of twelve panels, eight of which are hinged shutters that can be opened to reveal other panels. When closed, the exterior panels show a grisaille painting of the Annunciation along with images of the two donors and representations of Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. Upon opening, the interior panels reveal a complex and symbolically rich composition centered around the Adoration of the Lamb of God, surrounded by various figures including prophets, apostles, martyrs, and hermits.
The upper register of the opened view shows a Deësis composition, with a central panel depicting God the Father, flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, with angels and Adam and Eve on the outer wings. The central lower register focuses on the Mystic Lamb, with a procession of the faithful approaching to worship, and the Fountain of Life in the foreground. The side panels depict the righteous judges and the knights of Christ on the left, and the hermits and pilgrims on the right.
The Ghent Altarpiece is notable for its artistic innovation, particularly the use of oil-based paints to achieve transparency and luminosity, which was groundbreaking at the time. The van Eycks' mastery of oil painting techniques allowed them to create a level of detail and realism that was unprecedented. The altarpiece's complex iconography has been the subject of extensive scholarly research, and its influence on Northern Renaissance art is immeasurable.
Throughout its history, the Ghent Altarpiece has survived numerous threats, including theft, vandalism, and wartime looting. It has been the object of several restoration campaigns, the most recent of which began in 2012, revealing the original vibrancy of the van Eycks' palette and offering new insights into their method and materials.
The Ghent Altarpiece remains a masterpiece of Northern Renaissance art and a testament to the genius of Hubert and Jan van Eyck, whose contributions to the development of painting have been celebrated for nearly six centuries. Its complex iconography and exquisite execution continue to fascinate art historians, scholars, and visitors from around the world.
