Painting Description
The Left Panel from the Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the "Panel of the Knights of Christ," is one of the composite panels that form part of the renowned Ghent Altarpiece, or "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb," a polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. This monumental work of Northern Renaissance art is attributed to the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck and was completed in 1432. The altarpiece, when fully opened, measures 3.5 by 4.6 meters and consists of twelve panels, eight of which are hinged and can be opened or closed to reveal different scenes.
The left panel is a significant part of the altarpiece's lower register and depicts the "Just Judges," a group of noble and biblical figures who are portrayed as knights. These figures are believed to symbolize the righteous rulers who will herald the coming of Christ. The panel is renowned for its intricate detail, use of perspective, and the realistic portrayal of the figures and their elaborate garments. The knights are depicted in a procession, moving from left to right, and are thought to include portraits of contemporary figures, possibly including Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, and even a self-portrait of Jan van Eyck himself.
The panel has a complex history, including being stolen in 1934. The original panel has never been recovered, and what is currently displayed is a reproduction based on a black-and-white photograph and a painted copy from the 16th century. The theft remains one of the most infamous art thefts in history and the panel's absence is a significant loss to the art world.
The Ghent Altarpiece, and the left panel in particular, is celebrated for its pioneering use of oil paint, which allowed the van Eyck brothers to achieve new levels of detail, translucency, and luminosity in their work. The altarpiece's influence on Northern European art was profound, and it is considered one of the masterpieces of Western art. The left panel plays a crucial role in the overall narrative and theological program of the altarpiece, which combines Old Testament prophecy with New Testament fulfillment, centered on the theme of salvation and the redemptive sacrifice of Christ.
