Painting Description
''Divan Japonais'' is a lithograph poster created in 1893 by the French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. It is one of his most famous works and exemplifies the artist's fascination with the colorful and theatrical nightlife of Paris during the late 19th century. The poster was commissioned to promote the Parisian café-concert, Le Divan Japonais, located on the rue des Martyrs. This establishment was known for its exotic Japanese-inspired interior and was a popular entertainment venue among the bohemian and artistic circles of the Montmartre district.
The composition of ''Divan Japonais'' features three figures: the dancer Jane Avril, a regular subject of Toulouse-Lautrec's art, is depicted sitting in the audience; the critic Édouard Dujardin is portrayed in the foreground, absorbed in the performance; and the singer Yvette Guilbert, another favorite personality of the artist, appears on stage in the background, recognizable by her long black gloves which were a trademark of her act, although her head is cropped out of the image. The poster is characterized by its bold lines, flat areas of color, and the use of perspective that draws the viewer's eye to the central figure of Jane Avril, whose elegant silhouette dominates the scene.
''Divan Japonais'' is a prime example of Toulouse-Lautrec's innovative approach to poster design, which broke away from the traditional narrative style of the time. Instead, he focused on capturing the mood and atmosphere of the Parisian nightlife, using a style that was influenced by Japanese prints and the emerging Art Nouveau movement. The poster's striking design and its role as an advertisement for a popular entertainment venue make it an important artifact of the Belle Époque era. Today, ''Divan Japonais'' is held in high regard as a masterpiece of graphic design and is featured in numerous museum collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
