Painting Description
English literature is a body of written works produced in the English language by inhabitants of the British Isles (including Ireland) from the 7th century to the present day. The major literatures written in English outside the British Isles are treated separately under American literature, Australian literature, Canadian literature, and New Zealand literature.
English literature has sometimes been stigmatized as insular. It can be argued that no single English novel attains the universality of the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace or the French writer Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. Yet in the Middle Ages the Old English literature of the subjugated Saxons was leavened by the Latin and Anglo-Norman writings, eminently foreign in origin, in which the churchmen and the Norman conquerors expressed themselves. From this combination emerged a flexible and subtle linguistic instrument exploited by Geoffrey Chaucer and brought to supreme application by William Shakespeare. During the Renaissance the renewed interest in Classical learning and values had an important effect on English literature, as seen in the works of Spenser, Milton, and Ben Jonson.
The history of English literature is the development of writings and literary techniques used in it over time. English literature is a wide context of study which has continued to gain popularity in many institutions of higher learning. The context of the study is broad with confusing components to many learners. English literature includes prose fictions, short stories, drama, novels and poetry among other writings.
The history of English literature is dated back to the 14th century. During this period, society at every level underwent profound changes. War, plague, belligerent churchmen, and rabidly lashing heretics are the historical backdrop to the works of the period's major writers, Geoffrey Chaucer, John Gower, William Langland, and the so-called Pearl Poet. It was also the period during which the Roman Catholic Church, as an entity distinct from other "branches" of Christendom, officially began and ended.
Children's literature or juvenile literature includes stories, books, magazines, and poems that are enjoyed by children. Modern children's literature is classified in two different ways: genre or the intended age of the reader.
Children's literature can be traced to stories and songs, part of a wider oral tradition, that adults shared with children before publishing existed. The development of early children's literature, before printing was invented, is difficult to trace. Even after printing became widespread, many classic "children's" tales were originally created for adults and later adapted for a younger audience. Since the 15th century, a large quantity of literature, often with a moral or religious message, has been aimed specifically at children. The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries became known as the "Golden Age of Children's Literature" as this period included the publication of many books acknowledged today as classics.
Hans Holbein the Younger was a German artist and printmaker who worked in a Northern Renaissance style. He is best known as one of the greatest portraitists of the 16th century. He also produced religious art, satire, and Reformation propaganda, and he made a significant contribution to the history of book design. Although less well-known for his work in children's books and illustrations, Holbein's woodcuts and engravings have been used in various publications over the centuries, including those intended for a younger audience. His detailed and often cleverly symbolic art has provided rich imagery for book illustrations. However, there is no specific work titled "English Literature, History, Children's Books & Illustrations by Hans Holbein the Younger" that can be addressed as a singular entity or collection. Holbein's contributions to book design and illustration are generally discussed within the broader context of his artistic oeuvre.
