Painting Description
"Die Philosophie" (Philosophy) is a painting by the Austrian Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt, completed in 1900. It was one of the three paintings that Klimt created for the ceiling of the Great Hall at the University of Vienna, alongside "Medicine" and "Jurisprudence." These works were commissioned as part of a series to celebrate the university's jubilee. "Die Philosophie" was intended to embody the theme of the intellectual and cultural discipline of philosophy.
The painting features a dreamlike tableau that is characteristic of Klimt's symbolist phase, with a swirl of ethereal figures and shapes that defy clear interpretation. The central figure is a female, possibly representing the enigmatic nature of philosophical thought, surrounded by a multitude of faces and forms that seem to float in an ambiguous space. The canvas is rich with allegorical imagery, and the use of gold leaf and decorative motifs reflects Klimt's interest in Byzantine art, which would later culminate in his famous "Golden Phase."
"Die Philosophie" and its companion pieces were met with controversy upon their unveiling. Critics and academics of the time found the paintings to be too radical and erotic, deviating from the traditional academic style expected for such a venerable institution. The controversy was emblematic of the broader cultural clash between conservative academic art and the avant-garde movement that Klimt was a part of.
Despite the initial negative reception, "Die Philosophie" and the other university paintings are now considered seminal works in Klimt's oeuvre, illustrating his departure from traditional representation and his progression towards a more modern and abstract aesthetic. Unfortunately, the original painting was destroyed during World War II, and it is known to us only through black-and-white photographs and color reproductions based on these photographs. The loss of the original has added a layer of mystique to the work and has made it an important symbol of the cultural destruction wrought by the war.
