Reni painted "Aurora" in 1614, decorating the ceiling of a casino (a type of private room) within the Palazzo. The fresco represents the mythological story of Aurora, the Roman goddess of dawn. Reni's version pictures Aurora's passage from night to day, aligning the paths of gods and goddesses along the curved surface of the ceiling.

In the fresco, Aurora glides across the sky, heralding the day. Following her is Apollo (the Greek god equivalent to Sol) in his chariot, pulled by four horses.
