Painting Description
"Aurora" is an early 17th-century fresco by Italian painter Guido Reni, prominently in Rome's Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi. Historically significant as a masterpiece of Baroque painting, Reni's "Aurora" is esteemed for its artistic brilliance and thematic complexity.
Reni painted "Aurora" in 1614, decorating the ceiling of a casino (a type of private room) within the Palazzo. The fresco represents the mythological story of Aurora, the Roman goddess of dawn. Each morning, Aurora would renew herself and fly across the sky, announcing the arrival of the sun, her brother Sol. Reni's version pictures Aurora's passage from night to day, aligning the paths of gods and goddesses along the curved surface of the ceiling.
In the fresco, Aurora glides across the sky, heralding the day. Following her is Apollo (the Greek god equivalent to Sol) in his chariot, pulled by four horses. The vibrant colors and expressive movement create a dynamic image, in which Reni masterfully utilizes the technique of quadratura to blur the lines between real architectural features and painted illusions.
Reni’s "Aurora" is encircled by the Horae, the Greek minor goddesses of the times of day and the hours. These figures serve as representational figures of the twelve hours of the day. Their joyful procession accents the brightness and beauty of the rising sun, thus embodying the Renaissance's iconic regard of dawn as a metaphor for enlightenment.
Reni's "Aurora" is a representative work of the Roman High Baroque era, demonstrating distinguished baroque features such as dramatic expression, a sense of motion, and the use of light and shadows. The fresco is regarded as one of Reni's most accomplished works, reflecting his skillful blend of static monumentality with succinct dramatic narrative.
