Painting Description
Kizil Avlu, also known as the Red Basilica or the Red Hall, is a monumental structure located in the ancient city of Pergamon (modern-day Bergama) in Turkey. The Central Hall, as it is often referred, was part of a larger temple complex that dates back to the Roman period, around the 2nd century AD. The complex was initially dedicated to the worship of Egyptian gods, particularly the god Serapis, and later converted into a Christian basilica during the Byzantine era.
The Italian architect and engineer Giovanni Battista (Giambattista) Borra (1712–1786) is known for his detailed drawings and studies of ancient ruins, including those of Pergamon. Borra's work at Pergamon, conducted during his travels with the British diplomat and antiquarian Robert Wood in the 1750s, was instrumental in documenting the classical ruins and contributed significantly to the understanding of ancient architecture. His meticulous illustrations and measurements of the Kizil Avlu provided valuable insights into the structure's original appearance and its architectural significance.
The Central Hall of the Kizil Avlu is particularly notable for its impressive dimensions and the remnants of its once grand architecture. The hall is characterized by its massive brick walls and the remains of its vaulted ceilings, which hint at the grandeur of the original structure. Borra's drawings capture these features and offer a glimpse into the hall's past splendor, serving as an important resource for historians and archaeologists.
Today, the Kizil Avlu remains a prominent archaeological site and a testament to the architectural prowess of the Roman Empire. It is a popular tourist attraction and is part of the Pergamon UNESCO World Heritage Site. Borra's work, including his studies of the Central Hall, continues to be of great importance for the preservation and interpretation of this ancient monument.
