Painting Description
"George Washington" is a series of portraits of the first President of the United States, George Washington, painted by the American artist Gilbert Stuart. Stuart created multiple versions of his Washington portraits, with the most famous being the Lansdowne portrait, the Vaughan portrait, and the Athenaeum portrait, the latter of which is perhaps the most well-known depiction of Washington and was famously used as the image on the one-dollar bill.
Gilbert Stuart (1755–1828) was one of the most celebrated American portraitists of his time, and his images of George Washington have become iconic, playing a significant role in shaping the visual legacy of the presidency and the historical memory of Washington himself. Stuart's portraits of Washington were created in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a period that saw the consolidation of the United States' independence and the formation of its political institutions.
The Athenaeum portrait, named after the Boston Athenaeum where it was housed for many years, is particularly notable for its unfinished appearance, with details in Washington's face fully realized against a largely unmodeled backdrop. This portrait was begun in 1796 and is one of the 130 replicas Stuart painted from the unfinished original. Despite its incomplete state, the Athenaeum portrait captures the dignity and gravitas associated with the first president.
The Lansdowne portrait, completed in 1796, is a full-length representation of Washington that includes symbolic elements reflecting his role as a statesman and hero of the American Revolution. Commissioned by Senator William Bingham of Pennsylvania, this portrait was a gift to the British Prime Minister, the Marquess of Lansdowne, and it has been widely reproduced and copied.
Stuart's portraits of Washington are not only significant works of art but also historical documents that reflect the esteem in which Washington was held by his contemporaries and the nation at large. They are housed in various prestigious museums and collections, including the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Stuart's ability to capture the likeness and character of his sitters has ensured that his portraits of George Washington remain among the most enduring and recognizable images of the United States' founding father.
