Painting Description
''Aeneas, Anchises, and Ascanius'' is a sculptural group created by the Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who is widely considered one of the leading sculptors of the Baroque period. Carved from marble, this work was completed between 1618 and 1619, when Bernini was still in his early twenties, showcasing his precocious talent. The sculpture depicts a scene from Virgil's epic poem, the ''Aeneid'', capturing the moment when the Trojan hero Aeneas carries his elderly father Anchises on his shoulders, while his young son Ascanius walks beside them, as they flee the burning city of Troy.
The work is notable for its dynamic composition and the emotional intensity it conveys. Bernini masterfully balances the figures in a complex arrangement that suggests both movement and stability. Aeneas is shown straining under the weight of his father, who carries the household gods, symbolizing the continuity of Troy's legacy. Ascanius, on the other hand, appears youthful and unburdened, signifying hope and the future. The sculpture is a powerful representation of filial piety, duty, and the transmission of cultural heritage across generations.
Commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the sculpture is part of the Borghese Collection and is housed in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. ''Aeneas, Anchises, and Ascanius'' is one of the works that established Bernini's reputation as a sculptor of extraordinary skill and imagination, and it remains a significant piece in the study of Baroque art. The sculpture's early creation date also marks it as one of the foundational pieces that would lead to Bernini's prolific career, during which he would create some of the most iconic works of the Baroque era.
