Painting Description
Portrait of Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556)" is an oil-on-panel portrait by German painter Gerlach Flicke, known for his miniature painting work during the 16th century. Heady with religious and historical symbolism, this work stands out in Flicke's oeuvre for its direct engagement with its subject, Thomas Cranmer, the first Protestant Archbishop of Canterbury.
Created circa 1545-1547, the portrait depicts Cranmer, one of the leading figures in the English Reformation movement under King Henry VIII and Edward VI, at the height of power. Notably, it portrays Cranmer in his episcopal rochet, holding a book in his hand, presumed to be a symbol of his theological writings that instrumentally shaped the Church of England.
The painting vividly brings to life Cranmer's persona, with his sombre expression and subtle display of authority, reflective of his central role in the turbulent politics of the time. Though small in size, measuring only 3.74" x 5.12", it effectively captures the cleric's complex character and the intense religious debate of the era.
The painting's existence was unknown until 1970 when a London art dealer sold it. Now in the possession of the National Portrait Gallery, it continues to grip art historians' interest, representing a unique melding of art, religion, and politics during the Tudor era.
