Painting Description
Samuel Butler (1612-1680) was an English poet and satirist, best known for his mock-heroic narrative poem "Hudibras." Born in Strensham, Worcestershire, Butler was the son of a farmer and received his education at the King's School, Worcester. Although he briefly attended Cambridge University, he did not complete a degree. Butler's early career included various clerical and secretarial positions, but it was his literary work that brought him lasting fame.
"Hudibras," published in three parts between 1663 and 1678, is a satirical poem that lampoons the Puritans and other factions involved in the English Civil War. The work is notable for its clever use of rhymed couplets and its biting wit, drawing comparisons to Miguel de Cervantes' "Don Quixote." The poem was immensely popular in its time, earning Butler the patronage of influential figures such as the Duke of Buckingham and King Charles II.
The engraved portrait of Samuel Butler by George Vertue, based on a painting by Gerard Soest, is one of the most recognized images of the poet. Gerard Soest, a Dutch portrait painter who settled in England, was known for his skillful and expressive portraits. George Vertue, an English engraver and antiquary, was renowned for his detailed and accurate engravings of historical figures and artworks. Vertue's engraving of Butler captures the poet's thoughtful demeanor and has been widely reproduced in various editions of "Hudibras" and other literary collections.
Despite his literary success, Butler did not achieve significant financial stability during his lifetime. He died in relative obscurity in 1680 and was buried in St. Paul's, Covent Garden. Posthumously, Butler's work continued to be celebrated, and his influence can be seen in the satirical writings of later authors such as Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope. The engraved portrait by Vertue remains a testament to Butler's enduring legacy in English literature.
