Painting Description
'''Whistlejacket''' is an iconic oil painting created by the British artist George Stubbs in 1761-62. Renowned for its striking realism and the absence of a background, the painting depicts Whistlejacket, a celebrated racehorse of the 18th century, rearing up against a stark, empty canvas. The work is considered one of Stubbs's masterpieces and is a prime example of his expertise in equine anatomy and his innovative approach to portraiture.
Measuring approximately 292 x 246.4 cm (9 feet 7 inches x 8 feet 1 inch), the painting was commissioned by the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, Charles Watson-Wentworth, a patron of Stubbs and a prominent Whig statesman. Whistlejacket was one of the Marquess's most prized racehorses, and the painting was intended to be the centerpiece of a series of horse portraits for the grand staircase at Wentworth Woodhouse, Rockingham's Yorkshire estate.
Stubbs's decision to forgo a landscape or narrative background was unprecedented for an equine portrait of this scale and period. This choice focuses the viewer's attention entirely on the horse and emphasizes the animal's power, beauty, and grace. The painting's name, Whistlejacket, was derived from a contemporary racehorse medicine, highlighting the thoroughbred's significance in the racing world.
The work is celebrated for its meticulous detail and the lifelike depiction of Whistlejacket's muscular physique, glossy coat, and spirited expression. Stubbs's understanding of equine anatomy, gained through extensive study and dissection, is evident in the accurate rendering of the horse's form. The dynamic composition and the illusion of movement within the painting demonstrate Stubbs's skill in capturing the essence of the living animal.
Today, "Whistlejacket" is held in the collection of the National Gallery in London, where it continues to be admired for its artistic and historical significance. The painting is not only a testament to George Stubbs's talent as an animalier but also serves as a cultural artifact reflecting the 18th-century fascination with horse racing and the emerging field of animal painting in British art.
