Painting Description
"A Mon Seul Desir" is the most famous of the six tapestries in the "Lady and the Unicorn" series, woven in the late 15th century (around the 1410s) in the style of the Franco-Flemish school. The exact origins and the identity of the master weavers remain unknown, though it is believed that the tapestries were commissioned by the Le Viste family, as evidenced by their coat of arms depicted in the tapestries. This particular tapestry, whose name translates to "To My Only Desire," is often interpreted as representing love or understanding.
The tapestry depicts a noble lady placing a necklace into a box held by her maidservant, in a tent that is sumptuously decorated with flora and fauna motifs, symbolizing the richness of the natural world. A lion and a unicorn, both bearing banners, flank the lady, adding to the allegorical and heraldic significance of the scene. The background is filled with a millefleur (thousand flowers) pattern, common in tapestries of this period.
The "Lady and the Unicorn" series, including "A Mon Seul Desir," is renowned for its deep symbolism, intricate design, and the mystery surrounding its precise meaning and origins. These tapestries are considered masterpieces of French medieval art and are currently housed in the Musée de Cluny in Paris, France. The enigmatic and alluring nature of "A Mon Seul Desir" continues to captivate scholars and art lovers, making it a subject of ongoing study and admiration in the art historical community.
