Frederick George Rees Cuming, known professionally as Fred Cuming RA, is a contemporary British artist who has established a reputation as a master of color and atmosphere. Born on September 7, 1930, in London, Cuming developed an interest in art at a young age. He pursued his passion for painting by studying at the Sidcup School of Art from 1945 to 1949, and later at the Royal College of Art from 1951 to 1955, where he earned his degree with honors.
Cuming's work is primarily focused on landscapes, seascapes, and atmospheric interiors. He is particularly renowned for his evocative depictions of the English and Irish landscapes, often capturing the transient effects of light and weather. His paintings reflect a sense of place and moment, imbued with a lyrical and emotional quality that resonates with viewers.
In 1964, Cuming was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA), a significant milestone in his career, and in 1974, he was made a full Royal Academician (RA). His contributions to art have been recognized through various awards and honors, including being elected a Royal Academician of the Royal West of England Academy and serving as a member of the New English Art Club.
Throughout his career, Fred Cuming has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad. He has had solo exhibitions and his works are held in numerous public and private collections. Despite being in his 90s, as of my knowledge cutoff in 2023, Cuming continues to paint and contribute to the art world, remaining an influential figure among British landscape painters.
