Born on September 10, 1797, in Großbadegast, near Köthen, Prussia, he demonstrated an early aptitude for drawing and painting.

Initially, Krüger studied at the Berlin Academy under the guidance of Charles Kolbe and later continued his education with the animal painter Heinrich Meyerheim. He quickly gained a reputation for his talent in depicting horses and their riders, which led to significant commissions from the Prussian court. Krüger's work was characterized by its meticulous detail, vibrant realism, and the ability to capture the character and individuality of his subjects. His portraits often featured members of the Prussian nobility and military figures, alongside their horses, in various ceremonial and everyday settings.

Krüger's most productive period was during the reign of King Frederick William III and his successor, Frederick William IV. His paintings from this era provide a unique visual record of Prussian society and military life. His mastery in the portrayal of horses earned him the nickname 'Pferde-Krüger' ('Horse Krüger').
