Painting Description
"The Meagre Company" is a renowned group portrait painted by the Dutch Golden Age artist Frans Hals in 1633-1637, with Pieter Codde completing parts of the work. This masterpiece, also known as "The Company of Captain Reinier Reael and Lieutenant Cornelis Michielsz Blaeuw," is part of a series of civic guard portraits that were popular in the Dutch Republic during the 17th century. The painting is notable for its depiction of the Amsterdam militia, specifically the St. George civic guard company, and is distinguished by its informal composition and the lively expressions of its subjects, which was a departure from the more static and formal group portraits of the time.
The work is titled "The Meagre Company" due to the slender appearance of the figures, a characteristic that sets it apart from other, more robust civic guard portraits. This nickname also reflects the contrast between this painting and the more sumptuous and grandiose civic guard portraits by Hals' contemporaries, such as Rembrandt. Hals' mastery in capturing the vitality and individuality of his subjects is evident in this work, showcasing his skillful brushwork and his ability to render texture and light in a way that brings the scene to life.
Originally commissioned to Frans Hals, the painting's completion was eventually entrusted to Pieter Codde due to unknown circumstances, possibly including the size of the commission or Hals' other commitments. Codde, a contemporary of Hals known for his fine painting style, completed the figures on the right side of the canvas. Despite the collaboration, the painting maintains a cohesive appearance, testament to the skill and compatibility of the two artists.
"The Meagre Company" is part of the collection of the Amsterdam Museum but is on long-term loan to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it is displayed among other important works of Dutch Golden Age painting. The painting not only serves as a significant example of Hals' work and Dutch portraiture but also provides insight into the social and cultural context of 17th-century Amsterdam, reflecting the pride and communal spirit of the city's civic guard companies.
