Painting Description
"The Conjuration" (also known as "Witches' Sabbath" or "El Aquelarre") is a famous painting by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, created in the late 18th century. This work is part of Goya's series of witchcraft paintings and is a prime example of his dark and enigmatic style during this period. The painting depicts a coven of witches gathered in a desolate landscape, engaged in a nocturnal ritual, under the watchful eye of the Devil, who appears in the guise of a he-goat.
Goya's interest in the supernatural and the macabre is evident in "The Conjuration," which reflects the artist's critical view of the superstitions and the irrational beliefs that were prevalent in Spanish society at the time. The painting is characterized by its dramatic chiaroscuro, with stark contrasts between light and shadow contributing to the ominous atmosphere. The figures of the witches are rendered with a sense of grotesque realism, which enhances the painting's unsettling effect.
"The Conjuration" is part of a series of six paintings that Goya created on the theme of witchcraft for the Duke and Duchess of Osuna's Alameda Palace. These works were commissioned by the Duke and Duchess, who were among Goya's most important patrons. The series is considered a precursor to Goya's later "Black Paintings," which he painted directly onto the walls of his house, the Quinta del Sordo, and which further explore themes of fantasy, madness, and the irrational.
Today, "The Conjuration" is held in the collection of the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid, Spain. It continues to be studied and admired for its powerful imagery and its place within the context of Goya's oeuvre, as well as its reflection of the social and political tensions of late 18th-century Spain. The painting remains an important work in the history of art, exemplifying Goya's innovative approach to depicting the darker aspects of the human condition.
