Painting Description
"Los Caprichos" is a series of 80 prints in aquatint and etching created by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, which was published in 1799. The work is primarily an artistic experiment that explores the complexities of human behavior and criticizes the social and political issues of the time. Goya created these prints to reflect his personal disillusionment at various levels of society, including the aristocracy, the clergy, and the middle class, whom he saw as behaving irrationally or corruptly.
The prints in "Los Caprichos" are characterized by their imaginative and often grotesque imagery, which includes representations of witches, ghosts, goblins, and other fantastical creatures. These figures often serve as metaphors for human folly or vice. The dark and dramatic tone of the series is a departure from Goya's earlier, more lighthearted works, signaling a shift in his artistic direction towards a more critical and introspective approach.
"Los Caprichos" was initially intended for commercial sale, but the political climate of the time made this difficult. After selling only 27 copies, Goya withdrew the prints from sale and later gifted the plates to the Royal Calcography. Today, "Los Caprichos" is considered a seminal work in the history of Western art, notable for its innovative techniques and its bold commentary on the human condition. The series remains influential, reflecting Goya's profound impact on both the Romantic movement and modern art.
