Painting Description
"Caprichos - Plate 1: Francisco Goya y Lucientes, painter and engraver" is the first etching in the series of 80 prints known as "Los Caprichos" by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828). Created between 1797 and 1799, "Los Caprichos" are a satirical critique of late 18th-century Spanish society, addressing themes such as the folly of human behavior, superstition, and the corruption of the church and the nobility.
Plate 1 serves as a self-portrait of the artist and an introduction to the series. In this etching, Goya is depicted at work, surrounded by owls and bats, which are often interpreted as symbols of folly and ignorance. The presence of these creatures suggests the dark and introspective nature of the series, as well as the artist's intention to illuminate the 'darkness' of society through his work. The plate is inscribed with the words "Francisco Goya y Lucientes, painter and engraver" and sets the tone for the critical and moral examination that characterizes the entire "Caprichos" series.
Goya's innovative techniques in etching and aquatint allowed him to achieve remarkable tonal variation and dramatic effects, which contribute to the haunting and dreamlike quality of the images. "Los Caprichos" were initially offered for sale to the public but were withdrawn shortly after due to the fear of political reprisal. They have since been recognized as a pivotal work in Goya's oeuvre and a significant artistic and social commentary of the time.
The "Caprichos" series has been extensively studied and is held in high regard for its artistic merit and its insightful, albeit scathing, social critique. Plate 1, as the opening piece, is particularly significant for setting the stage for Goya's exploration of the human condition and the vices of society. The series is housed in various collections, including the Museo del Prado in Madrid, and remains a subject of interest for art historians, scholars, and the general public for its enduring relevance and impact on the art of printmaking.
