Painting Description
Coronation of the Virgin" is an artwork by the Italian painter Fra Filippo Lippi. Painted between approximately 1439 to 1447, the piece is considered an emblematic specimen of the Early Italian Renaissance art. Housed the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the painting measures 198.1 cm by 207.6 cm and is executed in Tempera on panel.
The "Coronation of the Virgin" displays scenes typical of Christian iconography, deriving its visual narrative from the New Testament. Central to the tableau is the depiction of the Virgin Mary seated on a throne with the Christ crowning her as Saints John the Evangelist, Paul, Peter, and Augustine, among others, look on. The bottom panel portrays Lippi's elaborate interpretation of the life of St. John the Evangelist, demonstrating a significant shift from the simplistic illustrations prevalent during the medieval period.
Lippi's painting style in this artwork imbues it with both theological significance and artistic richness. The use of perspective and emphasis on detailed architectural features highlight Lippi's fascination with architectural forms and two-dimensional spatial-illusion, likely influenced by his contemporary, Florentine architect Filippo Brunelleschi. A contributing factor to the rise of Florentine Renaissance Art, Lippi's "Coronation of the Virgin" melds both humanist principles and religious iconography in an intricate portrayal of the celestial hierarchy, being hailed as an important composition in the study of early-Renaissance painting.
