Painting Description
"Potato Flowers" is a botanical illustration by Elizabeth Blackwell, a notable figure in the world of 18th-century scientific art. It is one of the plates from her work "Herbarium Blackwellianum," which is a comprehensive collection of botanical illustrations. Elizabeth Blackwell (1707–1758) was a Scottish botanical illustrator and author who undertook this ambitious project to meet the financial needs of her family, particularly to release her husband from debtor's prison.
The "Herbarium Blackwellianum" was published in several volumes between 1737 and 1753 and was one of the first botanical books to be published with the scientific names of plants. It was also notable for being the first such work to be entirely engraved, illustrated, and hand-colored by a woman. Blackwell's illustrations were highly regarded for their accuracy and aesthetic appeal, and they contributed significantly to the field of botanical science.
The plate "Potato Flowers" specifically depicts the flowering part of the potato plant, Solanum tuberosum, which was becoming an increasingly important crop in Europe during Blackwell's time. Her illustration would have served both as a scientific record and as an aid for identification and classification in the burgeoning field of botany.
Blackwell's work was well-received and earned her recognition from the Society of Apothecaries in London, as well as the patronage of Sir Hans Sloane, President of the Royal Society. Her illustrations remain a testament to her skill as an artist and her contribution to botanical science and art. The "Potato Flowers" plate, like the rest of the "Herbarium Blackwellianum," is an important historical document that reflects the intersection of art, science, and the role of women in the scientific community of the 18th century.
