Painting Description
"The Peaceable Kingdom" is a series of paintings by American folk artist Edward Hicks, which depict a prophetic vision from the Book of Isaiah (Isaiah 11:6–8) in the Bible. Created between 1820 and 1849, Hicks painted over 60 versions of this theme, reflecting his own interpretation of the religious and moral ideals of the Society of Friends (Quakers), of which he was a minister. The central theme of the paintings is the harmonious existence of all creatures, as envisioned in the prophecy where predators and prey lie together in peace, led by a child.
Each rendition of "The Peaceable Kingdom" includes a variety of animals, both wild and domestic, coexisting peacefully with one another. The compositions typically feature lions, lambs, and other animals gathered around a child in a tranquil, Edenic landscape. In the background, many versions also depict William Penn's treaty with the Native Americans, an event that symbolized Quaker ideals of pacifism and brotherly love, and which Hicks used to draw a parallel between the biblical prophecy and the potential for peace in human affairs.
Hicks' work is characterized by its naive style, reflecting his lack of formal artistic training. Despite this, his paintings are rich in symbolism and have been widely analyzed for their representation of Quaker theology and the political climate of the United States during Hicks' lifetime. "The Peaceable Kingdom" series is considered one of Edward Hicks' most significant contributions to American art and is often cited as a prime example of early American folk painting.
The paintings are held in various museums and private collections, with the different versions showing slight variations in composition and detail, reflecting Hicks' evolving perspective over the years. "The Peaceable Kingdom" remains an iconic series that continues to be studied for its artistic, cultural, and religious significance.
