Painting Description
''Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans'' (Little Dancer of Fourteen Years) is a sculpture by Edgar Degas, originally sculpted in wax circa 1880-1881. It is one of Degas's most iconic works and represents his extensive study of ballet and dancers, which featured prominently in his paintings and pastels. The sculpture stands out in the history of art as one of the first major works by a renowned artist to depict a young, working-class dancer with a realism that diverged from the idealized images of ballet dancers prevalent at the time.
The figure is that of a young ballet student, Marie van Goethem, who was enrolled in the Paris Opéra Ballet. The original wax sculpture was dressed in a real bodice, tutu, and ballet slippers, with a horsehair wig tied with a silk ribbon, making it a striking mix of two- and three-dimensional media with added real-life textures. This mixed-media approach, along with the subject's unidealized features and stance, was revolutionary and somewhat controversial at the time of its creation.
After Degas' death, more than 150 wax sculptures were found in his studio. His heirs, recognizing the fragility of the wax, authorized a series of posthumous bronze casts to be made. Between 1920 and 1921, the Hebrard foundry cast 28 bronzes of the ''Petite Danseuse'', plus one for the Degas estate and several others later on. The bronzes were cast using the lost wax process, which preserves the details of the original wax sculpture.
The ''Petite Danseuse'' is now held in various museum collections around the world, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It remains a subject of study and admiration for its groundbreaking role in the development of modern sculpture and its poignant, enduring portrayal of the life of a young dancer in 19th-century Paris.
