Painting Description
Supper at Emmaus" is an oil-on-canvas painting by Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Veláz, an eminent Spanish painter from the 17th century. It recreates a recognizable biblical moment from the Gospel of Luke, 24:30–31, wherein the resurrected Jesus reveals himself to two of his disciples at the table in the village Emmaus, yet remains unrecognized by them until he breaks bread.
Produced in 1622, this piece of art is typified by Velázquez's early tenebrism, emphasizing stark contrasts between light and dark, which were substantially influenced by Caravaggio. Exquisitely painted in hues of earthen tones, the scene captures the dramatic and eventual revelation, dotingly unfolding the complexities of the human facial expression, the peculiar metaphysical presence of Christ, and the modest yet evocative architectural background.
No extant copies of this painting exist today. The last record of "The Supper at Emmaus" was historically noted in 1734, but it presumably disappeared in the fire at the Royal Alcazar of Madrid. Its present visual documentation is majorly based on written descriptions and preparatory drawings. As such, the painting encapsulates Velázquez's artistic evolution while offering rich insights into the Spanish Baroque period, arousing widespread speculation and research among art scholars."
