Painting Description
The "Portico of the Temple of Kalabshah" is a renowned lithograph created by the Scottish artist David Roberts, featured in the first volume of his monumental work, "Egypt and Nubia." Published between 1846 and 1849, this collection is celebrated for its detailed and romanticized depictions of the ancient monuments and landscapes of Egypt and Nubia. Roberts, who traveled extensively through the region in the early 19th century, captured the grandeur and mystique of these ancient sites with a level of detail and artistry that was unprecedented at the time.
The Temple of Kalabshah, also known as the Temple of Mandulis, is a Greco-Roman temple originally located in Nubia, near the modern-day border between Egypt and Sudan. It was dedicated to Mandulis, a Nubian form of the sun god Horus. The temple was constructed during the early Roman period, around 30 BCE to 14 CE, under the reign of Augustus. The portico, or entrance hall, of the temple is particularly notable for its impressive columns and intricate carvings, which Roberts meticulously rendered in his lithograph.
Roberts' work was part of a larger trend in 19th-century Europe, where there was a burgeoning interest in the ancient cultures of the Near East, spurred by both scholarly curiosity and colonial ambitions. His lithographs provided many Europeans with their first visual impressions of these distant lands, contributing significantly to the Western understanding and appreciation of ancient Egyptian and Nubian heritage.
The lithographs were produced with the assistance of Louis Haghe, a Belgian lithographer known for his skill in capturing the subtleties of Roberts' original sketches and watercolors. The collaboration between Roberts and Haghe resulted in some of the most exquisite and enduring images of 19th-century Orientalist art. Today, "Egypt and Nubia" remains a valuable historical document, offering insights into the 19th-century European perspective on the ancient world and preserving the visual legacy of sites that have since been altered or relocated due to modern developments, such as the construction of the Aswan High Dam.
