Painting Description
The Obelisk at Alexandria, commonly referred to as Cleopatra's Needle, is a prominent ancient Egyptian monument that has captivated historians, archaeologists, and art enthusiasts for centuries. Originally erected in the city of Heliopolis during the reign of Thutmose III around 1450 BCE, the obelisk was later transported to Alexandria by the Romans in 12 BCE. Standing at approximately 21 meters (69 feet) tall and weighing around 224 tons, this red granite monolith is one of a pair; its twin resides in London, while another pair of similar obelisks can be found in New York City and Paris.
The obelisk is inscribed with hieroglyphs that were added by Ramesses II to commemorate his military victories. These inscriptions provide invaluable insights into the religious and political landscape of ancient Egypt. The term "Cleopatra's Needle" is somewhat of a misnomer, as the obelisk has no direct connection to the famous Queen Cleopatra VII, but the name has persisted through popular usage.
David Roberts, a renowned Scottish painter, included the Obelisk at Alexandria in his seminal work, "Egypt and Nubia, Vol.1," published in the mid-19th century. Roberts' detailed lithographs and accompanying descriptions offer a vivid portrayal of the obelisk's grandeur and its historical context. His work played a crucial role in sparking Western interest in Egyptian antiquities and contributed to the broader field of Egyptology.
The obelisk's journey from Alexandria to its current location in London is a tale of engineering marvel and international diplomacy. It was gifted to the United Kingdom in 1819 by Muhammad Ali Pasha, the ruler of Egypt and Sudan, as a gesture of goodwill. However, it wasn't until 1877 that the obelisk was finally transported to London, a feat that involved overcoming numerous logistical challenges and even a shipwreck.
Today, Cleopatra's Needle stands on the Victoria Embankment near the River Thames, serving as a testament to the enduring legacy of ancient Egyptian civilization and its far-reaching influence on world history.
